AUM - OM

Om purna mada purna midam
Purnaat purnam udachyate
Purnasya purnam adaaya
Purnam eva vasishyate
Om shanti shanti shantih"

We can thus imagine the complexity of AUM and how difficult it is to explain it. However here are a few depictions of AUM in rather simple forms:

1. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Gospel of John

2. "OM" Is the sound of all creation and it is a prayer Itself.

3. "OM" symbolizes the infinite and Divine Being and the entire Universe.

4. "OM" pronounced `ohm' represents the Supreme Being.

5. The past, present, and future are all included in this one sound"AUM". A timeless Mantra.

6. AUM is the sound of the Universe.

7. AUM is the sound of our heart.

8. "AUM" Is the eternal world of Brahman the supreme unmanifest Divine Being.

9. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali state that "AUM" is the supreme name of God and it cannot have any meaning other than God.

10. According to tradition, every `thing' manifest comes from Primordial Vibration, which is symbolized by The "AUM" - all material objects, all living beings, including each of us, all spiritual teachings, all languages, including Sanskrit and of all Sacred Texts.

Hence let us tell ourselves simply that AUM encompasses ourselves, all that is within our understanding and beyond. Swami Dayanand said that it takes more than a lifetime to understand the Gayatree Mantra which tries to simplify some of the attributes of God in order to help people to understand God. Therefore how much time will it take us to understand God Himself? With our limited mind we should keep on contemplating on the word and its meaning.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji writes that, "From Onkaar, the One Universal Creator God, Brahma was created. He kept Ongkaar in his consciousness. From Ongkaar, the mountains and the ages were created. Onkaar created the Vedas." )
